BEFORE YOU TRAVEL

Mobile data in Turkey, without the first-day errand.

Turkey runs one of the stricter device-registration regimes a traveller is likely to encounter: insert a Turkish SIM into a foreign phone and a 120-day countdown starts, after which the device is blocked from every Turkish network unless a substantial registration fee is paid. A Turkey eSIM changes the calculation, because an international eSIM profile is a roaming service rather than a Turkish-issued SIM, so it does not trigger that local IMEI clock in the same way a Turkish SIM card does. NXTL connects to Turkey's national networks on arrival, charged pay-as-you-go, without turning a short holiday into an unexpected long-term registration decision.

WHY NXTL HERE

Built for a Turkey trip that may not stop in Turkey.

Infrastructure that follows how travellers explore Turkey and keep moving afterwards.

Three national networks, lowest rate first

Connect to Turk Telekom, Vodafone, Turkcell. NXTL's Cheapest preference routes your device to the lowest-priced available connection, with manual operator override available in the app.

Fast 5G in cities, resilient 4G fallback

5G is shown only where the live network records confirm it, with LTE fallback on the same eSIM across Turkey.

Same eSIM continues across borders

Your connection does not restart at the border. Continue into Armenia, Azerbaijan, Bulgaria, Georgia, Greece, Iraq or Iran — the same installed eSIM and prepaid balance keep working with no new profile to install.

One reusable eSIM profile. No monthly subscription, no card swapping, and your balance never expires.

TURKEY CONNECTIVITY GUIDE

Where mobile data works best — and where terrain changes the picture.

Practical guidance on mobile coverage, travel corridors, arrival airports and local SIM requirements in Turkey.

Three national operators run Turkey's mobile networks: Turkcell, Vodafone Turkey and Türk Telekom. Turkcell has the widest footprint, including rural and eastern regions, and is generally the strongest option for travel beyond the main cities; Vodafone Turkey performs well in Istanbul, Ankara and Izmir; Türk Telekom, the fixed-line incumbent's mobile arm, covers central and western Turkey solidly. LTE reaches over 99% of the population, and 5G is rolling out in major cities, though it is not yet as widespread as in Western Europe, so 4G remains the practical default across most of the country.

The fact that matters most for a visitor is Turkey's IMEI registration system, run by the telecoms authority (BTK). A phone bought abroad works on a Turkish SIM for 120 days from the moment a Turkish SIM is first inserted; after that, the device is blocked on all three networks unless its IMEI is formally registered — a process that, as of 2026, runs through the e-Devlet government portal and carries a substantial annual fee (tens of thousands of Turkish lira, revised each year), plus a limit of one registration per passport every three years. This system exists to combat grey-market phone imports, not to inconvenience tourists, and a short holiday well under 120 days is not directly affected by it — but a longer stay, a second visit within the same window, or simply not realising the clock started can catch a traveller out. An international travel eSIM works differently: because it authenticates as a roaming visitor on a foreign network identity rather than as a newly issued Turkish subscriber line, it does not start the same local registration clock that inserting a physical Turkish SIM does.

Buying a local Turkish tourist SIM as a visitor is otherwise straightforward — a passport is sufficient, tourists are limited to one active line, and electronic ID verification has applied since mid-2026 — but airport-kiosk prices at Istanbul Airport have been reported at roughly double city-store prices for the same package, so timing and location both affect what a physical SIM actually costs.

The practical sequence for most visitors: install the eSIM profile over Wi-Fi before departure, keep the home SIM active for calls and passcodes, and switch on the data eSIM once landed, without inserting any physical Turkish SIM and without starting the 120-day IMEI clock at all.

YOUR OPTIONS IN TURKEY

Skip the arrival-hall SIM decision.

A Turkish tourist SIM only needs a passport to buy, but the bigger consideration for a foreign phone is Turkey's separate IMEI registration system: inserting any Turkish SIM starts a 120-day countdown, after which the phone is blocked from Turkish networks unless a registration fee is paid through the e-Devlet portal. A roaming data eSIM is not a Turkish-issued SIM, so it does not trigger that same clock, which is the more relevant fact for most short-stay visitors than the SIM-purchase process itself.

Do I need to register ID for a data eSIM in Turkey?

You do not complete local prepaid registration to activate NXTL data in Turkey. Identity checks still apply if you later buy a physical SIM that assigns a domestic number.

Can I hotspot from my phone in Turkey?
