All three operate among the densest 5G deployments globally, with excellent performance in Seoul, Busan, Incheon and Daegu — including underground subway lines, high-speed KTX rail corridors and major shopping districts. SK Telecom is generally regarded as having the most extensive infrastructure depth; KT and LG U+ compete closely on 5G speed benchmarks in metropolitan areas. Rural Jeolla provinces, eastern mountain national parks and remote Jeju coastal stretches can still see 4G fallback regardless of provider, but urban and intercity travel rarely encounters dead zones.
Incheon International Airport (ICN) is where most inbound visitors make their first connectivity decision. KT, SK Telecom and LG U+ all operate staffed tourist SIM kiosks and unmanned vending machines in the arrivals halls, selling short-validity data packages heavily marketed to visitors. Every locally issued prepaid SIM and eSIM requires passport-based alien registration under the Telecommunications Business Act before activation — a quick process at a staffed counter, typically under fifteen minutes, but still a queue on arrival. Convenience-store tourist SIMs at CU or GS25 shift part of the registration onto a carrier app after purchase.
A global data-only travel eSIM sidesteps the alien-registration step because it does not issue a Korean phone number, and it can be installed before the inbound flight so data works at ICN baggage claim rather than after a kiosk visit. The same NXTL balance also carries onward into Japan or other Asian destinations without a Korea-specific bundle expiring at departure — relevant for itineraries that pair Seoul with Tokyo or Osaka on one trip.
The practical sequence: install the eSIM profile over Wi-Fi before the inbound flight, keep the home SIM active for calls and passcodes, switch on the data eSIM once landed at ICN or Gimpo, and walk past the tourist SIM kiosks rather than queuing unless a local Korean phone number is specifically needed.
