Historical product update · Originally published June 14, 2025 · Updated August 2026

This article documents the final development stage of NXTL’s 2025 platform upgrade. The upgrade was subsequently completed, and NXTL has continued improving its global data eSIM, pricing, coverage, applications and account-management tools.

Some services considered during this earlier development period later changed as NXTL focused its consumer product specifically on global pay-as-you-go mobile data.

Behind the Scenes of the NXTL Platform Upgrade

Major platform improvements involve much more than changing the appearance of a website or adding a new feature.

During the first half of 2025, NXTL worked on a broader infrastructure upgrade affecting eSIM provisioning, mobile-data connectivity, account balances, usage reporting and customer account management.

By June 2025, much of the core development had been completed and the upgraded platform had entered its final integration and testing stages.

This article records what was happening behind the scenes during that period and how the work contributed to the NXTL service available today.

What Was Being Upgraded?

The development work covered several interconnected parts of the NXTL platform.

Global eSIM Provisioning

One of the principal objectives was to improve the process used to create, assign and manage eSIM profiles.

A global eSIM requires coordination between several technical systems. These include profile provisioning, network access, billing, account balances and usage reporting.

The upgraded foundation was designed to make this process more reliable and easier to manage as NXTL expanded.

Mobile-Data Connectivity

NXTL also worked on the infrastructure responsible for connecting eSIM users to supported mobile networks.

The goal was to support a broader range of destinations and network options while giving customers clearer information about the rates available in each country.

Today, NXTL provides mobile-data connectivity across more than 180 countries. Multiple supported networks are available in many destinations, although availability depends on the country, location, device and roaming-partner coverage.

Account Balance and Usage Management

NXTL has always been built around a pay-as-you-go balance rather than fixed travel bundles.

During the platform upgrade, work was carried out to improve how balances, usage and eSIM information were connected within the customer account.

This development later supported clearer access to:

  • account balance;
  • data usage;
  • eSIM information;
  • top-ups;
  • invoices;
  • available countries;
  • supported networks;
  • current data rates;
  • account and service notifications.

The objective was to give customers greater visibility into how their mobile data was being used and charged.

Platform Stability and Testing

Before making major infrastructure changes available more broadly, NXTL performed internal testing across the different parts of the service.

Testing focused on the interaction between eSIM provisioning, mobile-network connectivity, account balances, usage records and customer-facing tools.

This stage was important because a problem in one component can affect several other parts of the customer experience.

Rather than treating each system separately, the upgrade aimed to establish a more connected and scalable technical foundation.

Why This Development Mattered

NXTL was not designed to operate like a traditional country-specific travel-bundle store.

The long-term objective was to support one reusable global data eSIM that customers could keep installed and use across supported destinations.

That required infrastructure capable of supporting:

  • pay-as-you-go mobile data;
  • country-specific and network-specific pricing;
  • a reusable prepaid balance;
  • multiple network options;
  • changing rates and coverage;
  • clearer usage information;
  • improved eSIM management;
  • future web and mobile application features.

The 2025 platform work helped establish the foundation for these capabilities.

A Focused Global Data Product

During earlier development stages, NXTL also explored a broader combination of consumer data, voice, SMS and phone-number services.

The consumer product later became deliberately focused on mobile data.

Today, the NXTL consumer eSIM is a data-only service. Customers can keep their regular SIM or eSIM active for their phone number, calls and SMS while using NXTL for mobile data.

This clearer focus allows NXTL to concentrate its consumer development on:

  • global mobile-data connectivity;
  • transparent pay-as-you-go rates;
  • country and network availability;
  • network selection;
  • account and balance management;
  • mobile applications;
  • data usage tools;
  • travel and backup connectivity.

Business voice, SMS and telephone-number services are handled separately from the consumer NXTL data eSIM.

What Happened After This Update?

The platform upgrade described in this article was completed later in June 2025.

Development did not stop after the migration.

NXTL continued improving the service through:

  • broader global coverage;
  • updated country and network rates;
  • one reusable eSIM across supported destinations;
  • improved account tools;
  • better balance and usage visibility;
  • mobile application development;
  • network choices and tiers;
  • easier top-ups;
  • notifications and usage controls;
  • rewards and customer-engagement features.

The product has continued evolving through multiple stages rather than being treated as a one-time release.

How NXTL Works Today

NXTL now follows a straightforward pay-as-you-go model.

Customers purchase one global data eSIM, install it on a compatible device and add prepaid balance to their account.

When mobile data is used, the applicable charge is deducted from that balance according to the selected destination and network rate.

There is:

  • no monthly subscription;
  • no requirement to purchase a new eSIM for every country;
  • no fixed bundle that expires after a short validity period;
  • no need to estimate a specific data allowance before every trip.

Unused account balance remains available for future mobile-data usage.

Customers can review current pricing and network availability before using the service in a destination.

Designed for Travel and Everyday Backup

Although global travel remains an important use case, NXTL can also be useful outside traditional holidays.

The reusable eSIM can be kept available for:

  • business travel;
  • remote work;
  • multi-country trips;
  • tablets and secondary devices;
  • temporary mobile internet;
  • backup connectivity;
  • situations where a primary mobile provider has limited coverage;
  • occasional international data usage.

Because the balance is not attached to a short-lived bundle, customers can keep the service ready between trips.

Continuous Development

The work documented in this article represents one stage in the continuing development of NXTL.

Global connectivity changes constantly. Mobile networks expand, roaming relationships develop, pricing changes and new customer needs emerge.

NXTL therefore continues working on improvements across:

  • pricing;
  • coverage;
  • network availability;
  • mobile applications;
  • account controls;
  • usage information;
  • customer rewards;
  • service reliability;
  • installation and onboarding.

Each major update builds on the same central direction:

One reusable global data eSIM with transparent pay-as-you-go pricing and no need to purchase a new bundle for every trip.
