Historical product update · Originally published June 21, 2025 · Updated August 2026
This article documents the completion of NXTL’s major 2025 infrastructure migration. The platform has continued evolving since this milestone, and some services and instructions from that period are no longer part of the current consumer offering.
Today, NXTL is focused on one reusable global data eSIM with transparent pay-as-you-go pricing, connectivity across more than 180 countries, and no requirement to purchase a new bundle for every trip.
The 2025 NXTL Platform Upgrade Was Completed
In June 2025, NXTL completed a major migration to an upgraded global eSIM platform.
The work affected multiple parts of the service, including:
- eSIM provisioning;
- mobile-data connectivity;
- customer accounts;
- prepaid balances;
- usage reporting;
- destination pricing;
- network availability;
- account-management tools.
This was an important milestone in NXTL’s development. It established a stronger technical foundation and allowed us to continue improving the product through broader coverage, more transparent pricing, better account management and greater network choice.
The migration was not the end of NXTL’s development. It was one stage in the continuous improvement of the platform.
The earlier stages of this work were documented in our updates about the NXTL platform infrastructure upgrade and the development taking place behind the scenes.
What Changed During the Upgrade?
Updated eSIM Infrastructure
The migration introduced updated eSIM profiles and moved NXTL to a newer provisioning infrastructure.
This improved how eSIM profiles were issued, connected to customer accounts and used across supported mobile networks.
Customers directly affected by the migration received instructions that applied to their accounts at that time. References in the original 2025 announcement to obtaining a replacement eSIM applied only to that migration period and should not be treated as a current requirement.
Current customers should follow the latest installation instructions supplied with their NXTL eSIM or available through their NXTL account.
Improved Account Integration
The upgrade created a stronger connection between customer accounts and important service information.
This provided the technical foundation for managing:
- eSIM information;
- prepaid account balance;
- mobile-data usage;
- account status;
- country and network rates;
- balance top-ups;
- invoices;
- installation details;
- customer notifications.
Bringing these elements together made it possible to develop better web and mobile account-management tools in subsequent updates.
Customers can now also manage key parts of their service through the NXTL Android application on Google Play.
Expanded Destination and Network Support
The upgraded infrastructure supported the continued expansion of NXTL’s global connectivity.
Today, the NXTL eSIM provides mobile-data access across more than 180 countries. Multiple supported networks are available in many destinations, allowing customers to choose between different options based on local availability, coverage and price.
Customers can review the current list of supported operators, countries and available mobile technologies on the NXTL global eSIM coverage page.
Individual network availability and performance vary by destination. Actual connectivity depends on factors such as:
- local operator coverage;
- device compatibility;
- available roaming relationships;
- network congestion;
- signal conditions;
- geographic location;
- 4G or 5G availability.
NXTL does not promise one fixed speed, latency or uptime figure across every destination because these factors depend partly on the local operator and conditions outside NXTL’s direct control.
More Transparent Country and Network Pricing
The migration also supported a more flexible approach to mobile-data pricing.
Rather than requiring customers to purchase a fixed package for every country, NXTL uses a prepaid account balance. Data usage is deducted from that balance according to the applicable country and network rate.
This allows customers to:
- check pricing before using data;
- compare available network options;
- pay based on actual usage;
- keep unused balance for future trips;
- use the same eSIM across multiple supported countries;
- avoid purchasing a new bundle every time they travel.
Customers can use the NXTL data-pricing calculator to check current rates by country and network.
Rates and network availability can change, so the live pricing page should always be treated as the current source of pricing information.
Why the Migration Mattered
A reusable global eSIM requires much more than an installation QR code.
Behind the customer experience are several connected systems responsible for:
- issuing and managing eSIM profiles;
- authenticating mobile connections;
- providing access to supported networks;
- recording mobile-data usage;
- applying the correct destination and network rate;
- deducting usage from the customer’s balance;
- displaying account and service information;
- processing top-ups and payments.
The 2025 migration improved the foundation connecting these systems.
That made it possible for NXTL to continue developing a service intended for long-term use rather than one-time travel packages.
How the NXTL Consumer Product Evolved
During earlier stages of NXTL’s development, the platform offered or explored a broader combination of consumer data, calls, SMS and telephone-number services.
NXTL subsequently made the strategic decision to focus its consumer product on global mobile data.
The current NXTL consumer eSIM is data-only. It does not provide a traditional telephone number, consumer calling service or SMS inbox.
Customers can keep their usual physical SIM or primary eSIM active for calls and messages while selecting NXTL for mobile data. Compatible dual-SIM devices generally allow both services to remain installed on the same phone.
This clearer focus allows NXTL to concentrate its consumer development on:
- international mobile-data access;
- transparent pay-as-you-go rates;
- destination and network coverage;
- one reusable global eSIM;
- account balance and usage tools;
- network choice;
- mobile applications;
- travel connectivity;
- secondary and backup mobile data.
Business voice, SMS and telephone-number services are handled separately from the consumer NXTL data eSIM.
How NXTL Pay-As-You-Go Data Works
NXTL is built differently from conventional travel eSIM stores that primarily sell fixed data packages for individual destinations.
With NXTL:
- You purchase one global data eSIM.
- You install it on a compatible device.
- You add funds to your prepaid NXTL balance.
- You check the current rate for your destination and available network.
- You use mobile data when needed.
- The corresponding cost is deducted from your account balance.
There is no monthly subscription and no requirement to estimate exactly how many gigabytes you will need before every trip.
The balance is not attached to a short seven-day or thirty-day travel bundle. Unused standard account balance remains available for future eligible data usage, subject to the applicable NXTL terms and conditions.
One Reusable Global eSIM
A central objective of the upgraded platform was to provide a reusable global connectivity experience.
Instead of purchasing and installing a new eSIM for every destination, customers can keep the NXTL eSIM installed on a compatible device and use it across supported countries.
This makes NXTL suitable for:
- international holidays;
- regular business travel;
- multi-country trips;
- digital nomads;
- remote workers;
- tablets and secondary devices;
- occasional international data usage;
- temporary mobile internet;
- backup connectivity.
Customers should not delete the NXTL eSIM after completing a trip unless instructed to do so by NXTL support. The same profile is designed to remain installed for future use across supported destinations.
Development Continued After NXTL 2.0
The completion of the 2025 migration did not mean that the NXTL platform was finished.
NXTL has continued working on improvements involving:
- country and network pricing;
- broader destination support;
- additional network options;
- account and eSIM management;
- mobile applications;
- top-up and payment tools;
- usage visibility;
- service notifications;
- network-selection controls;
- rewards and customer-engagement features;
- installation and onboarding.
Some improvements are immediately visible to customers. Others involve the underlying infrastructure required to support future functionality.
Major milestones remain available through the NXTL eSIM blog, allowing customers to follow how the platform has developed over time.
NXTL Today
NXTL currently provides one reusable, data-only eSIM for pay-as-you-go mobile connectivity across more than 180 countries.
The service is built around four central principles.
One global eSIM
Keep one compatible eSIM profile installed and use it across supported destinations.
Pay for actual usage
Mobile-data charges are deducted from a prepaid balance according to the applicable country and network rate.
No expiring travel bundles
Customers are not required to purchase a fixed data allowance that disappears after a short validity period.
Transparent network pricing
Available destination and network rates can be checked before using the service.
Coverage and performance remain dependent on the supported networks available in each location.
Continuous NXTL Development
NXTL 2.0 was an important technical milestone, but it was never intended to be the final version of the service.
Global mobile connectivity continuously changes. New networks become available, rates develop, devices gain new capabilities and customer needs evolve.
NXTL therefore continues upgrading the platform rather than treating one release as a finished endpoint.
Our long-term direction remains clear:
One reusable global data eSIM, transparent pay-as-you-go pricing and no need to purchase a new bundle for every trip.
